Gettin' Ready for a Rainy Day!

October 15, 2008

When rain comes in the middle of a Fort Worth, Texas summer, I get on my knees and praise God!  Visions of a slight respite from a hot, humid day dance in my head and make me just a bit giddy.  Then reality strikes: uh oh...two kids inside the house A.L.L.D.A.Y. L.O.N.G. [insert Psycho shower scene music here]. So, I put the mom skills in motion and plan a by-the-seat-of-our-pants day.  Here is what we have found to entertain us on a rainy day:

  1. The Fort Worth Museum of Science is an easy drive from anywhere in the City. Our toddler loved Kidspace - a replica of our everyday life.  There is a grocery store, an ATM, a car, gobs and gobs of legos, a puppet theater where the kids can see themselves on TV, and much more.  And, if you happen to wander through the back door where the educational area is, you can see all sorts of interesting creatures in cases.

  1. From there, it is a quick walk over to the Cowgirl museum. Although not nearly as interactive or kid-friendly, they do have a few things of interest. And, it's one admission charge for both museums, so it's a no-brainer really. There is a kid's area that has crayons and coloring paper, stick ponies, a teepee that an adult can fit in (WHAT?! Trust me, you'll be in it too!), and some other fun western props. The rest of the museum really is ho-hum. But, on a rainy day, you'll learn some trivia about cowgirls you never knew you wanted to know!

  1. If you feel like blending in with the crowds, check out Ridgmar Mall. It has a kid's play area right smack in the middle of the Mall.  It's appropriate for toddlers and slightly older ones too. It is hard to get a seat on a crowded day and with all the munchkins running around, you have to keep a close eye on yours. But, it is fun and comes with the added bonus of...you guessed it...SHOPPING!

  1. On the north end of town, Grapevine Mills has the same sort of bonus. Lots of shopping, lots of entrances to dash in from the rain, restaurants, and, of course, a play area. There are far too many things to spend money on here, including Build-a-Bear Workshop, GameWorks, Mini Lunar golf, etc.  So, be prepared for the "Mommy, I want..." refrain.

  1. Last, but not least, when we have one of those rains that you can't see 2 inches in front of you, we stay home.  I pull out scarves and make drums out of pots and pans and maracas out of old prescription bottles filled with beans. We put in a Little Einsteins dance cd and dance, dance, dance/shake, shake, shake until everyone falls on the floor exhausted and giggling!

God bless rain in Texas!
