Mom - It's Your Turn to Pick the Song!

March 02, 2009

Ahh, that's music to my ears. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen...mom gets to pick the song! Finally - hmm, should I put on 80's hip hop for some flashbacks? Maybe a radio talk show to get some laughs? How about some smooth jazz? Alas, as always, it's "none of the above" for me. It has to be something the kids can listen to safely, that won't bore them or confuse them. So, what's the answer? Show tunes.

That's right - Broadway music is the best! My kids love it and it's a great way to share some of the classics with them. West Side Story and Oklahoma are our favorites, but these and more have been shared with my children. I ordered the original recordings and sing the words along with whatever intonations the original actors had. (Thank goodness my kids don't know that I can't sing yet!)

My daughter will usually say "again", so I get to do it all over again! The best part is that now a song is stuck in my head and we sing it all that night.  My daughter learns the words and asks for it the next time.  My son just loves any music, so he's happy just seeing me reach over for the volume dial.

Next time it's your turn to pick the music, put in a show tune that you love. It's a great way to let your children in on a little piece of who YOU are!  Happy singing!
