Thanksgiving is in the Air!

November 21, 2008

As we are all scurrying around this weekend picking up the last minute ingredients for our favorite meal on Thanksgiving Day - pumpkin pie spice (forgot we used the last of it last year), cranberry sauce (for the day-after sandwiches), just one more bag of potatoes (can't have too much mashed potatoes) - take a minute with me to breathe deeply and think about why we do all this.  (Hint: it's not just preparation for the Big Game!)  Here are some of my favorite quotes that keep me grounded in the spirit of the season:

Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action.
W.J. Cameron

"You say, 'If I had a little more, I should be very satisfied.' You make a mistake. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled."
Charles Haddon Spurgeon

"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him,
and bless his name. For the Lord is good..."
Psalm 100:4, 5a

"Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow."
Edward Sandford Martin

"So once in every year we throng
Upon a day apart,
To praise the Lord with feast and song
In thankfulness of heart."
Arthur Guiterman, The First Thanksgiving
